One of the Key Result Areas identified by the BAP-SBP Board of trustees is the creation of basketball centers of training and excellence outside Metro Manila. The NBTC will be the first of its kind to be implemented in the Philippines.
The objective is to identify outstanding young male and female basketball players throughout the different regions/territories, with emphasis on developing and improving individual skills and team concepts.
The Center will then train them into future National Players per age group. The program is headed by Coach Eric Altamirano with the support of Alex Compton for NCR, Ramon Fernandez for Visayas and Manny Nitoreda for Davao/Mindanao.
The selection of 160 player (boys and girls) has already begun with the recommendation of different region/territory Network coaches.
NCR tryouts were held last December 23, 2007 at the Xavier School Greenhills. The selection committee will choose 80 boys (forty (40) 14-15y/o and forty (40) 16-17y/o) out of the 160 players who attended the tryouts to determine who will be invited to join the NBTC. This will be further trimmed down to twenty (20) boys ages 14-15 y/o and twenty (20) boys ages 16-17 y/o.
Players from the different NBTC territories (NCR, Cebu, Davao) will be invited to the Nike Elite Basketball Camp. This is a 6 day in-house camp, to be held in Brent International School in Mamplasan, Laguna. Outstanding players from this camp will be invited to the Nike All-Asia Camp in China (June 2008).
The NBTC players will also get the opportunity to be chosen for the National Youth Team that will compete in the SEABA Junior Men’s in Malaysia sometime May 2008, and the Asian Youth in Iran sometime September 2008.
